The Physical Education program at Subiaco is designed to foster a comprehensive development of students’ athletic skills and personal growth through a dynamic and inclusive curriculum. Starting from the early years, our focus is on nurturing Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS), which form the building blocks for future athletic performance and enjoyment of physical activities.
For students in Pre-Primary, Year 1 and 2, we emphasize body management, locomotor, and object control skills with a variety of activities that include rolling, balancing, sliding, jogging, running, leaping, jumping, hopping, dodging, galloping, and skipping, along with bouncing, throwing, catching, kicking, and striking.
As students advance to Year 3 and 4, they engage in a blend of these fundamental skills, complemented by simple tactical approaches in diverse physical activities and games designed to achieve specific outcomes. This integration encourages not only physical but also strategic development.
For the senior Year 5 and 6 students, the program evolves to refine these movement skills further. The students learn to adapt their movements effectively in various physical activities and games. They also begin to apply simple tactics in response to challenges involving people, objects, and space, such as transitioning between defensive and offensive positioning, and developing both verbal and non-verbal communication skills for effective teamwork.
Subiaco’s Physical Education curriculum extends beyond just skill acquisition; it aims to instil a sense of personal identity, resilience, and respectful relationships among students. Leadership opportunities are plentiful, particularly for our senior students, contributing to the school community through activities like Before School training sessions and Junior Swimming and Athletics Carnivals.
A distinctive feature of our program is the 2 Year Cycle of sports, ensuring that students are exposed to a broad spectrum of sports throughout their primary education. This variety not only enriches the students’ experience but also lays a strong foundation for lifelong enjoyment and engagement in physical activities. Sports include, AFL, Athletics, Baseball, Basketball, Cricket, Floorball, Handball, Jump Rope, Modcrosse, Netball, Soccer, T Ball, Tennis, Touch Rugby, Ultimate Frisbee, Volleyball and Water Polo
Our commitment to a holistic approach is evident through our community links with local sporting organizations, promotion of Healthy Hub and Sun Smart initiatives, and encouraging parental involvement. At Subiaco, we are dedicated to developing knowledgeable, skilled, and confident individuals who are motivated to lead active and healthy lifestyles.
