Welcome to the vibrant world of Visual Arts at Subiaco Primary School, where we nurture creativity and imagination in our students. Our Visual Arts program is designed to foster the holistic development of your child and provide them with a well-rounded education that includes the richness of artistic expression. Students from Year 1 to Year 6 undertake approximately 2 hours of structured art lessons, in our designated art studio space, with our Visual Arts specialist, Mrs Leith Elliott. Student artwork is continually exhibited in classrooms, our school open night, public artworks (Hiddlestone lane, Subiaco) external competitions and exhibitions as well as on our schools art instagram page.

At Subiaco Primary School, we understand that Visual Arts education is not just about creating beautiful works of art; it’s about shaping young minds and providing them with essential skills that will benefit them throughout their lives. Our program aligns with the Western Australian Visual Arts Primary Curriculum, ensuring that your child receives a comprehensive education in the arts including all studio areas (drawing, painting, printmaking, construction, ceramics, textiles, collage, mixed media, jewellery and digital media), in both making and responding strands.
Why is Visual Arts Education so important for your child’s development and education?
- Creativity and Expression: Visual Arts allow children to express their thoughts, emotions, and ideas in a unique and personal way. This fosters creativity, individuality, and self-confidence.
- Critical Thinking: Through art, students learn to observe, analyze, and think critically. This skill extends beyond the art classroom, benefiting their overall problem-solving abilities.
- Cultural Awareness: Art is a universal language that transcends borders. Exposure to a diverse range of art forms and styles helps students appreciate different cultures and perspectives.
- Fine Motor Skills: The act of creating art enhances fine motor skills, which are essential for tasks such as handwriting and more.
- Stress Reduction: Art offers a therapeutic outlet, allowing students to relax, reduce stress, and build emotional resilience.
- Communication: Visual art encourages effective communication, as students learn to convey complex ideas through their creations.
- Appreciation of Aesthetics: Our program instills an appreciation for beauty and aesthetics, which enriches their understanding of the world.
